"I admire artists who visualize what they are intending to do, before they take their palette and paint.
I can only think how I start. How it ultimately ends depends on influences I can not predict.
Every painting has its own inner metric and music, its own story. I have a strong preference to paint moods, in color, so that the viewer gets a feeling instead of a determination at what he sees..."

On regular basis I publish UPDATES about what`s currently `going on, on my easel`.
For you to comprehend the steps a painting goes through, from start to finish. For me, to perform some indispensable `checks and balances` in case something should not be quite right... ;)

'A hard lesson'
'A hard lesson' is een mastercopy van William-Adolphe Bouguereau: 'La leçon Difficile', op ware grootte:
(100 h x 70 b, 39.3" h x 27.5" w).
Eerder ben ik bezig geweest met een mastercopy van John Singer Sargent, eveneens op ware grootte
(100 b x 120 h, 39.3" w x 47.2" h): 'Lady Agnew of Lochnaw'. Zij siert nu in onze woonkamer.
Het doel van een mastercopy is te ontdekken hoe een schilder schilderde. Zo heeft iedere schilder zijn eigen stijl en techniek, of het nou om Rembrandt gaat,
Velazquez of Caravaggio.

Frequently a new course `Traditional oil painting techniques, painting in a realistic style` is being started. A course specially intended for those who want to learn to paint in the `Old masters tradition`.
In this course, which is suitable for both beginners and advanced painters, you will learn how to structure and build up a canvas according to the conventional painting techniques. In 10 lessons of each 2.5 to 3 hours, you will learn about composition, perspective, color theory and color, the workings of applying light and dark, of fabric expression, brushwork, tonation, working with glazes and working in layers. All of this will be taught with guiding references to paintings of famous ancient (and modern!) portrait, figurative, still life and landscape painters.
At half-time each lesson is interrupted for a `mini-lecture` of about 20 minutes, in which, by means of a slide show, particular aspects of painting and painting procedures according to the old Renaissance techniques will be clarified.During these `speed-colleges` - and for inspirational and illustrational purposes - different artists and disciplines of painting styles will be examined, such as Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Velázquez, John Singer Sargent, William Turner and surrealists like Salvador Dali. But contemporary artists will be discussed as well: Omar Ortiz, Christiane Wings, Rob Hefferan, Herman Tulp, Evert Thielen, Henk Helmantel, Walter Elst, Tjalf Sparnaay and others.
In the remaining time you will be painting with guidance of the teacher, providing you with tips and advice about the use of paints, brushes and canvas. Each lesson lasts 2.5 to 3 hours.
On a regular basis I give lectures on Art and Art history. I try to pass on 'the story of art' to my audience in a passionate way, with the aim of making them as enthusiastic about it as I am.
All lectures are provided with visual material and last approximately 60 to 90 minutes, including a short break. They can be performed at any desired location. If necessary the necessary equipment can be provided.
